Host Back-to-School Health Fair
…projected to assist 200 boys and girls ages 6 through 18

Scranton – The Back-to-School season is a busy time of year for students and parents/guardians.  To make things run a little smoother in preparation for the school year, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania proudly presents the Back-to-School Health Fair sponsored by the Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania.  This event will be held on August 13, 2010 at the central Club located at 609 Ash Street in Scranton.  This special event will begin around 8:00 a.m. and will run into the afternoon.

“This is the sixth consecutive year we’ve partnered with the Club to sponsor the Back to School Health Fair.  We’re very pleased that during that time, more than 2,000 youngsters have received important health screenings and prevention education as they get ready to go back to the classroom,” explains Cynthia A. Yevich, Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania senior director, community and foundation affairs.

Youth members from the Club’s central unit, Park It sites and Luzerne County Club extensions will receive free back-to-school health screenings administered by area health care professionals.  The youngsters will also receive a variety of safety, health and personal information they and their parents/guardians can utilize for reference materials.

According to Club Executive Director, Tricia DiBiasi Thomas, “We at the Club are so appreciative that several agencies, physicians and other health care professionals have volunteered their time and services to help our Club members prepare for the school year.
We are also proud to once again partner with Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania and are grateful for their continued commitment to the well being of the children we serve. Blue Cross has collaborated with us many times over the years, and their sponsorship of this event is another example of their concern for our community. ”

Healthcare professionals and organizations from all over Lackawanna County will volunteer their time to educate and safeguard Club members in preparation for the back-to-school season.  Provider participants should include: American Red Cross of Lackawanna County, PA State Treasury Department, Northeast Eye Institute, Childhood Lead Prevention, Moses Taylor Hospital and Northeast Regional Cancer Institute.  Check-ups include: eye, height, weight, blood pressure, scoliosis and skin care.

An on-site picnic will be conducted for the children at the conclusion of the Health Fair.
