Lamar Advertising Joins Boys & Girls Clubs of NEPA to Help Kids BE GREAT

SCRANTON – What do Denzel Washington, Shaquille O’Neal, Martin Sheen, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and General Wesley Clark have in common?

All five are products of the Boys & Girls Clubs.  And their faces – from when they were young members of the Club -- will be appearing throughout Lackawanna County promoting the important work of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania.  There are 10 billboards to date visible throughout Lackawanna County.

Billboards proclaiming the Boys & Girls Clubs’ new BE GREAT advocacy campaign will be posted, free of charge, courtesy of Lamar Advertising.  The messages are part of a nationwide initiative by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) to highlight the key issues affecting today’s young people, and the important role community-based organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs play in helping kids graduate from high school, achieve a healthy lifestyle, and develop good character traits.

“BE GREAT is a call to action to kids, that says they can and must realize their full potential to become productive, responsible and caring citizens,” explains Tricia DiBiasi Thomas, club executive director.  “However, it is also a wake-up call for adults, to raise awareness about the serious challenges facing our children, and to generate support for our local Boys & Girls Clubs.”

“This campaign will raise awareness and support for the Boys & Girls Clubs of NEPAand the more than 4,000 other Clubs around the country,” says Tom Donohue from Lamar Outdoor Advertising.  “A future Denzel Washington is at one of these Clubs right now.  We want to make sure that child – and every young person – has a chance to succeed and dream big. We are delighted to donate the space to make these displays possible.”

The BE GREAT campaign emphasizes a spirit of optimism and hope, reinforcing the positive benefits of Boys & Girls Clubs by focusing on the personal success stories of accomplished alumni -- celebrities and non-celebrities alike. 

The BE GREAT ads are part of a nationwide partnership between BGCA and the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) resulting in the posting of out-of-home messages across the country in a variety of venues, including billboards, bus shelters, shopping malls, taxi tops and airports. BGCA was named an OAAA national public service partner in 2008.

“Boys & Girls Clubs of America is an organization dedicated to helping our nation’s young people and we can think of no better cause where we could lend our support,” said OAAA President and CEO Nancy Fletcher. “Our member companies are good community citizens and their willingness to post this campaign for free is just another example of their dedication to the community.”
