The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania recently held its annual Youth of the Year competition. Club members must be between the ages of 13 and 18 to participate. The first place winner received a $1,000 scholarship to a higher education institution of their choice. The Club members were judged on family, school, community, and Boys & Girls Club involvement, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. Representatives from the community volunteered their time to judge the competition. After the judging, guest speaker Dan LaMagna, president of NEPA Miners and career coordinator at Lackawanna College, shared with the group why higher education is a wise choice to make after high school graduation.
